Louvre Virtual Tour Part Two: From Royal Palace to the People’s Gallery

duration 1.5 hours

Tour Overview

One of the world’s great art galleries, the Louvre is much more than just a museum. Glittering centrepiece of the city on the Seine for centuries, the palatial complex has taken on many faces over its long history; in part two of our virtual Louvre tour we’re picking up the story in the glory years of King Louis XIII, when the Louvre became an opulent royal residence and grandiose symbol of the reign. Join exert guide Thomas as he traces the story of France through the collection’s magnificent artworks, weaving a dramatic tale of power, revolution and intrigue taking in the French revolution, the transformation of the palace into a public art gallery in 1793, the rise of Napoleon and much more. Along the way we’ll get the story behind some of the most iconic artworks in the Western canon, from David’s portrait of Napoleon to Delacroix’s Liberty Leading the People, right up to IM Pei’s masterful modernist pyramid. If you’re itching to visit Paris but are stuck at home, then our virtual Louvre tour is the next best thing!

Tour Description

Meet your Guide: Thomas

Hi, I’m Thomas. A native of Florida, I studied History in the United States and France, Art History in France and Italy, and Archaeology in Italy. I am one of four brothers, one of many Tolkien fans, and one of very few native English-speaking licensed tour guides in Rome, where I have lived and worked with Through Eternity Tours since 2006. My particular interests are medieval history, Baroque painting, pork products, tasty cakes, and full-figured red wines. I speak English, French, Italian, a smattering of Spanish, and a few German swear words.

What Exactly is a Through Eternity Virtual Tour?

The world of travel might be on hold right now, but just because we're all staying at home to help the world overcome a common enemy doesn't mean we have to put our wanderlust on the back burner. Another enlightening tour by Thomas. Very insightful and unique presentation jam packed with historically engaging information. Thomas has a great personality...so personable and funny. Wonderful job...there was so much I didn't know about France and this historical setting. I have yet to see the Louvre I so that will definitely be the next tour I participate in!

Thomas was his usual intelligent, erudite, slight wry self, leading us back in time to discover the roots of the Louvre and its various places in history. We enjoyed it a lot and admire the scope of his knowledge!
