TOUR ITINERARY
From Ancient Empire to Vatican Masterpieces
Your day follows the story of Rome itself: from imperial spectacle to civic power, from Baroque streets to the masterpieces commissioned by the popes. Your private guide handles the details and adapts the pace to your interests, while reserved admission and private transportation between the historic center and Vatican City keep the day moving. The order of the itinerary may vary according to opening hours and timed-entry availability, but wherever the day begins, the aim is the same: to see Rome’s essential sights without spending your limited time figuring out how to connect them.
The Colosseum
Walk in the footsteps of the gladiators
Begin at the Colosseum, the monument that has come to symbolize ancient Rome around the world. From the outside, its immense scale is immediately striking; inside, the architecture reveals just how carefully the amphitheatre was designed to control movement, separate spectators and turn mass entertainment into a highly organized public experience.
Your guide will lead you through the Colosseum, reconstructing the world that once filled its tiers and arena. Gladiators fought here, but the programme was far broader than the duels that have come to define the building in popular imagination. Animal hunts, executions and elaborate spectacles filled the arena, while the emperors and their officials used the games to display wealth, generosity and power.
Look down toward the arena floor and you’ll see traces of the complex machinery and service spaces that operated beneath the spectacles. Your guide will explain how lifts, trapdoors, corridors and crews worked together to transform the arena in front of enormous crowds.
The Colosseum is one of Rome’s most familiar monuments, but seeing its interior while understanding how it actually functioned changes the experience. What survives here is not simply a great ruin: it is the shell of an enormous machine built for entertainment, politics and imperial theatre. On our private Rome in a day tour, you’ll come to understand the immense monument in all its complexity.
The Roman Forum
Walk through the political heart of ancient Rome
From the Colosseum, enter the Roman Forum and move through the center of the city that governed the ancient Mediterranean. Here, the ruins are not isolated monuments: together they formed the stage on which Roman religion, politics and public life unfolded.
Follow the Via Sacra past temples and triumphal monuments, including the Temple of Saturn and the Arch of Titus, and hear how the Forum changed as Rome grew from republic to empire. Your guide can reconstruct the buildings and ceremonies that once filled this crowded valley and point out the places associated with some of the most consequential episodes in Roman history, including the cremation of Julius Caesar.
The Forum can be difficult to read on your own. Columns, fragments and foundations tell only part of the story, while the spaces between them reveal how the ancient city was organized. With an expert guide, the ruins become a connected urban landscape: a place where senators debated, priests performed rituals, generals celebrated victories and ordinary Romans went about the business of the city.
Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel
come face-to-face with some of the greatest artworks ever created
After ancient Rome, continue to Vatican City for the second great chapter of the day. The Vatican Museums contain an extraordinary accumulation of art built up by centuries of papal collecting and patronage, but their scale can be daunting. Your guide cuts through the sheer volume, directing your attention to the works and spaces that reveal most clearly how the Vatican became one of the world’s great artistic centers.
Among the ancient sculptures, the Laocoön provides a remarkable link between Rome’s classical past and the Renaissance. Rediscovered in Rome in 1506, it had an immediate impact on artists including Michelangelo and became central to the Renaissance fascination with ancient Greek and Roman art.
Continue through the papal apartments and galleries decorated for powerful Renaissance patrons, including Raphael’s celebrated frescoes, before reaching the Sistine Chapel. Here, Michelangelo’s ceiling and Last Judgment bring together everything you’ve encountered so far: classical models, biblical narratives, Renaissance ideas about the human figure and the ambitions of the popes who commissioned these works. Your guide will help you read the frescoes as more than a sequence of famous images, explaining the stories, symbols and artistic decisions that give the chapel its extraordinary coherence.
St. Peter's Basilica
Discover the monumental church shaped by generations of artists and popes
The Vatican experience culminates in St. Peter’s Basilica, where Renaissance and Baroque Rome reached a scale almost impossible to imagine from the outside.Inside, your guide will introduce you to the works that define the basilica, including Michelangelo’s Pietà and Bernini’s Baldacchino, while explaining how the building evolved through the ambitions and competing visions of generations of popes, architects and artists.
The basilica can easily overwhelm simply because of its size. Your guide gives that grandeur a framework, pointing out the architectural decisions, artistic rivalries and papal ambitions behind what you see. The result is a clearer understanding of why St. Peter’s became one of the defining monuments of Western art and architecture. Before leaving the Vatican City, you’ll also have a chance to take in St. Peter’s Square and Bernini’s great colonnade, designed to frame the basilica and gather pilgrims before it.
Rome's Historic Center
Finish your day among the fountains, piazzas and streets of Baroque Rome
After the vast scale of the Vatican, return to the historic center and experience Rome in a different way. Here, the pleasure lies in moving through the city itself, where ancient monuments, Renaissance palaces, Baroque churches and bustling piazzas have accumulated layer upon layer.
At the Trevi Fountain, discover how an ancient Roman aqueduct still supplies water to the heart of the city and how Nicola Salvi transformed that practical legacy into one of Rome’s great theatrical landmarks. Continue to the Pantheon, whose enormous ancient dome remains one of the great achievements of Roman engineering. From here, the streets lead naturally toward Piazza Navona, where Bernini’s Fountain of the Four Rivers stands at the center of a piazza built on the footprint of an ancient Roman stadium.
By the end of the day, you’ve moved through the places that define Rome: the arenas of the emperors, the political heart of the ancient city, the masterpieces commissioned by the popes and the streets and piazzas where Rome still lives today. Rome cannot be fully seen in a day. But with the right route, an expert guide and a clear sense of what you’re looking at, one day can give you a remarkable understanding of why this city has mattered for more than two millennia.

Letizia bruschi of through eternity tours is an amazing tour guide
maria letizia bruschi was the kind of seasoned tour guide i was hoping to get for our private, just my wife and i, six hour + a break for lunch “rome in a day” tour. An art historian by training and a roman by birth, ms bruschi’s knowledge of ancient civilizations, important historical figures and events etc. Runs wide and deep, and she had no trouble at all fielding my many questions while at the same time keeping us moving. Her obvious passion for her work was infectious and she had our rapt attention until the end.another tour guide who we encountered along the way called her “the best”, something that i was not surprised at all to hear.she even patiently helped me map out our next days sight seeing itinerary. Well connected with all the guards we encountered, ms bruschi got us right to the head of the line every time,a very satisfying experience!
Fantastic rome in a day tour with awesome guide
this was definitely the best thing we did in rome! Our guide, thomas, was incredibly knowledgeable and fun to spend the day with. He did a perfect job of blending both the culture of the city and the history, and really made us feel immersed in rome. He was passionate and insightful, and was able to go in depth with answers to every single question we could possibly have. It’s a fantastic private tour, really spending the most time to see exactly what we wanted to and were most interested in.
Excellent introduction to rome
this was an excellent full-day (9am/4pm) tour private guided tour. Great way to discover the city and see the highlights. It was a very hot day (90f) and so quite challenging for the kids, but having our private guide was a huge saver of time (skipping lines, taking shortcuts…) and energy.
Maria letizia was our guide for the day. She managed to engage our 9 and 12 year olds for much of the tour, booked a table at a nice quiet (and cool) restaurant and generally made our lives so much easier. She introduced major concepts of history, art history, architecture etc, very quickly without overloading us. Thank you!!!
Our tour guide, eugenia d’andrea, was exceptional. She tailored our experience to our needs. We would love to be
able to take more tours in the future from her and through eternity tours.
Guia grandi was an exceptional and delightful tour guide. Our special tour through the colosseum, sistine chapel, and meal in downtown rome was phenomenal, to say the least. Guia was engaging and lovely, making our tour a high quality experience with a guide who felt like a longtime friend. I highly recommend her for anyone looking to secure a tour through rome and its deep history.
