And while guides may be experts in their field – art historians, archaeologists, or historians – they are still offering interpretations of the historical record, meaning the information you receive is filtered through a particular perspective. The best guides strive to foster a dialogue about history rather than closing off interpretations, but it’s always important to keep in mind that they’ll be bringing their own opinions into the mix.
Self Guided Tours
Guided tours are a great option when coming to Rome, however we know that they are not for everyone. In fact I would recommend a mix of guided and self-guided tours to get the most out of your experience.

The biggest advantage of a self-guided tour is the independence that comes with it. Whether you’re fascinated by artistic masterpieces, the military might of ancient Rome, or Rome’s amazing food culture, going at your own pace allows you to focus on what interests you most. With a wealth of self-guided options – including podcasts, guidebooks or just letting your feet take you where they will – there’s something for every traveler.
Rome is also a highly walkable city; the journey from the Colosseum and Forum to the Vatican takes around 45 minutes on foot. However, with so much history packed into every street, it’s easy to get sidetracked along the way. That’s why having a clear plan – or at least a sense of your top priorities – can make all the difference in making the most of your self-guided adventure.

To make the most of your time in Rome, we highly recommend doing a bit of research before your visit. Getting familiar with the city’s history in advance will help you discover what truly fascinates you.
Fortunately, there’s no shortage of excellent podcasts to bring Rome’s past to life. Mike Duncan’s History of Rome is a fantastic starting point for grasping the vast sweep of ancient Roman history. For a broader perspective, the always insightful (and reliably cranky) Melvyn Bragg’s In Our Time features superb episodes on Rome’s history. The Best Guidebooks for Exploring Rome
There are an array of great guide books on Rome available out there, but sitting right at the top of my personal list is Georgina Masson’s The Companion Guide to Rome. First published over 50 years ago it remains an absolute classic. Masson’s text is more than just a travel guide – it’s the guide that professional tour guides in the city learn from. I should know – it never left my side for years when I was leading tours in Rome.
What makes Masson’s guide so special? Beyond its historical insight, the book lays out charming, easy-to-follow walking routes that feature both famous landmarks and lesser-known corners of the city.
