What To Expect On Your Tour

Your tour begins immediately after a brief introduction to the site’s historical context provided by our archaeologist. Don your hard hat and you are ready to start your journey!
We offer two special experiences on this tour: an incredible exploration of the colossal spaces of Emperor Nero’s villa, the famous Domus Aurea (Golden House), recently reopened to the public in a remarkable state of conservation, that gives you the chance to relive the splendour of the palace’s rooms, gardens and incredible porticos.
We only offer this tour of Nero’s Golden House on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Incredible Architecture and Jaw-Dropping Frescoes
Emperor Nero commissioned his architects, Severus and Celer, to build his Domus Aurea (Golden House). The opulent project was completed incredibly quickly, taking only four years.
Despite his controversial life, which included killing his mother, Agrippina, and his wife, Nero was immensely proud of the Domus. The ancient historian Suetonius quoted him as saying upon its completion, “Good, now I can at last begin to live like a human being.”
Suetonius provided vivid descriptions of the house, noting its name came from the fact that “everything was covered with gold and covered with precious stones and shells.”
Thanks to the rediscovery and meticulous work by countless archaeologist we no longer have to rely on the words of Seutonius. We will the various rooms, courtyards and most impressive spaces of the Domus Aurea with an expert guide to illuminate the way.

Only about 25 people-so you could see the sites.
Our guide was knowledgeable and did a good job of connecting what we were seeing with the rest of the ruins we’ve seen in rome and placing them in the 1000 years of history! And our group was only about 25 people. Groups any larger than that & you can’t see what the guide is explaining and you are also an obstacle to rest of the people visiting the sites.
